Stewards of Creation and our Green Team

Watauga Avenue Presbyterian Church is committed to Loving God, Loving Others, and Serving All.

Watauga Avenue Presbyterian Church takes seriously God’s command to be good stewards of the earth. This includes a dedication to caring for the environment in various ways. We are committed to witness through humble, approachable service and careful stewardship of our resources.

Church members perform community service days such as neighborhood litter pick-up, and litterbag distribution at Tweetsie Trail. We serve only fair trade coffee, and have become a Certified GreenFaith Church.   The group has also sponsored various hikes and walks to enjoy with wonders of nature, including the Bluebell Hike at Winged Deer Park and a stroll along the Watauga River at Sycamore Shoals State Park.  Please consult our calendar or announcements for various scheduled events.

In 2019, WAPC negotiated with Johnson City to establish a community pollinator garden located at the corner of East Watauga Avenue and Stuart Street, adjacent to our church.  Since that time, this garden has proved to be an oasis of beauty with an ever-changing array of flowers and colors that attract bees and other beneficial insects, including butterflies.   Many of our green-thumbed members contribute their time in planting, weeding and overall maintenance of the garden.    The new season is about to begin.  Stop or drive by anytime; the garden is always changing.

SPREAD A LITTLE SUNSHINE – 6th ANNUAL PLANT DISTRIBUTION PROJECT – Saturday, May 13th

Deemed “Spread a Little Sunshine Campaign” by JCHA, everything is being prepared for us to do our annual plant distribution of tomatoes, peppers and marigolds, along with soil, to participating residents of the Johnson City Housing Authority. This is our sixth year working with both Evergreen Nurseries and the JCHA to bring a personal touch to the residents. There should be many requests with the delivery to approximately 125 households as we have done in past years. If there is no rain we will bag dirt from 8:30 – 10:00 am and begin delivering plants at 10 am. If it is to rain the dirt will be bagged prior to Saturday and delivery will begin at 10 am. Helpers should meet in the church parking lot to pick up their plants and supplies and get their route assignment. Members from Covenant Presbyterian Church have been invited to participate. We rejoice that this ministry is so well received and appreciated. Please contact Debi Hughes or the church office if you would like to assist. Thanks.

Please note: In case of rain or inclement weather, the plant distribution will take place later in May. Please call the church office for details.
